Camila Gonzalez Corea portrait

Camila’s work aims to explore, from a feminist perspective, the relationship between gender and technology. Her interest is heavily focused in activism within social media platforms by showing how behaviours within these digital manifestations can ultimately affect our real lives.
She studies and challenges initiatives addressing the exclusion of women in technology, focusing on their representation, or lack of, in the technological world or within technological spheres. By studying the many occurrences of unequal gender politics within said platforms, she aims to single out specific cases of disparity and provoke a dialogue among them.
Growing up in Costa Rica, a country which culture is heavily influenced by American culture, made her incredibly interested in influential artists from the USA. This fed into her current aesthetic and heavy use of modern pop references.
After finishing her MA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, London she became most known for her work using emojis, where she took images which represent cases of current online phenomenons. These images contain only emojis as their mode of representation. By making the image one which consists solely of this online specific modern language, she aimed to pinpoint these particular pieces in a specific time frame. Much like Lichtenstein used the comic book aesthetic to represent the pop culture of his time, Camila uses emojis to represent and talk about pop in 2018.
Although the aesthetic of her pieces is heavily inspired by pop art of the 50’s, it is extremely important to her that the thematic is of contemporary nature and taking an activist approach with her pieces is also pivotal around her oeuvre.
Currently with the aim of expanding the parameters of her practice, she is looking to incorporate and explore with different mediums as well as to work on collaborative projects with artists or companies which relate to the topics which her practice explores.
Working with companies in the physical world which directly deal or have influence on the issues which she speaks through her art, is her way of translating and linking a virtual influenced practice with the physical world. As she is of the belief that we live in a time where the two cannot longer be seen as two separate things and therefore we must strive to link and accomplish progress in both arenas.
